A series of videos that explore the local – tourist relationship, determining much of the social and cultural links on the island, movement and employment, housing, accommodation, landscape, nature. A relationship, which resembles the game – he loves me, he loves me not – tourists go home, tourists come back.
The video series showcases the artist during his 4 month long winter residency on the island in 2024. He cleans the beach, meticulously and gruelingly scrubbing all the algae that grows in the winter, undisturbed by the masses, in order to make the landscape inviting and ready for visitors to come.
He uses a mop and bucket to mop up the sea that washes up on shore, trying in vain to keep it clean and clear of the cold, foamy waves. He grinds down the coastal rock to create a perfectly shaped seat, where a tourist may sit down while enjoying the beautiful views of a sunny, perfect Jelsa scrubbed clean, rid of anything that might disturb the picture-perfect vacation photos or show any sign of wethering, time or decay.
